How to Contact Radio Stations

Indie radio promotion is a great way to reach new fans and build new relationships. However, how do you contact radio stations? What exactly you should send to the radio station or radio host?

What to Send

First, communicate with them before you send a package. If you send a package without making a connection first, your package may be ignored and tossed.

One of the most important things is to try to build relationships in the music industry. Once you get a conversation with the radio station, you can ask them if they want a CD of yours or a digital track.

If you’re sending a CD, make sure it’s professional. Are all track names and band info written?

If you’re sending your album digitally, it’s better to share with them a Dropbox folder or a download link along with a PDF of press info.

Furthermore, you can include a short bio, explaining the songwriting and recording process of your album, and some pictures of your band would be good to make it more personal.

What Not to Send

Sending an excessive amount of promo material does not seem professional. Sending also a full band biography is not wise. Unless if the radio host asks you to do so.

You should also consider not to share your tour dates yet. Unless if you are performing in the area of the station. In this case, you could request from the radio host to do a live interview or even play live in the studio.
