The keys to getting a Record Label’s attention
These are most recommended steps to take to truly get anyone in the music industry’s attention a particular artist or band.
1. Tour as much as possible: After that, keep performing more shows.
2. Get plenty of media attention: music reviews, media interviews, show previews, etc. You’ll need a publicist (PR) for this and, often times, a lot of shows and touring.
3. Build a big fan base: That usually comes from the above mentioned steps.
4. Get Licensing: Most licensing agents are looking for artist and bands with a lot of momentum. In other words, performers who are touring often and who get necessary media attention.
5. Learn how to pitch your band: Find Booking/Tour Agents and Managers to represent your band to get the shows you’re looking for.
6. Treat your music as business and prove you can make profit, that you are a good investment
If you do this correct, have a specific niche market, build a good fan following, and run your music career like a true business, often times you won’t need a record label. No one ever said it wouldn’t be difficult– but if you aren’t willing to put the effort in, most record labels and entertainment companies won’t think you’ll be willing to do the hard work later when they are investing in you to do so (that is, if they actually have any budget to pay your tour expenses at all).
